Creating Safe Spaces: The Role of Mental Health First Aiders
Mental Health First Aiders® are crucial in organisations by providing support for those seeking help but unsure where to turn. Their training goes beyond basic mental health awareness, enhancing active listening skills and learning information about various mental health diagnoses to better assist, reassure and respond to individuals in need.
What you can expect from this training:
- Being Approachable: Employees often struggle with personal issues during work hours and may not feel comfortable speaking with their managers or colleagues. Mental Health First Aiders are trained to provide support and to direct individuals to appropriate resources. They can be a crucial source of help for employees in need.
- Opening Up Conversations: Many people fear discussing mental health due to concerns about saying the wrong thing or making a situation worse. Having Mental Health First Aiders® in your workplace, encourages mental health to be a routine topic of conversation. They are there to support, help and intervene as needed, ensuring the well-being of individuals both at work and at home.
- Early Intervention in Mental Health: Mental Health First Aiders® are equipped with how to provide support and intervention during mental health crises. While professionals may not always be present at the onset of a problem, individuals trained in Mental Health First Aid can recognise distress, offer support and quickly guide the affected person towards appropriate help. This approach focuses on early intervention to promote recovery.
- Spotting Signs and Signposting to Support: Mental Health First Aiders® are vital in providing support, knowledge and signposting to local resources such as citizens advice and support groups, as there are other life events that can impact on someones mental health that once addressed will significantly improve their wellbeing. They also advocate for creating a supportive work environment where individuals can be honest about their struggles and receive the help they need.

Testimonials
“Louise was a great trainer. She was easy to get on with, very friendly, and highly knowledgeable. Nothing was ever too much trouble, and she made you feel at ease. I now feel a lot more confident, and although my current job role involves providing a lot of support to people in service with mental health needs, I now feel more knowledgeable and have a better understanding of various conditions, which will help me in the future.”
“Louise was absolutely fantastic throughout the two-day course. She was very relatable and delivered the training in an engaging and friendly manner. I really enjoyed the two days of training.”
“Louise was amazing, very knowledgeable, approachable, passionate, and empathetic. She created a great learning environment, making the two days both engaging and enjoyable, even though some of the topics were quite emotive. Louise ensured we were always in a safe and confidential space. I couldn’t fault Louise or the course at all. She is a real credit to MHFA England and the community. Thank you so much for all you do and for instilling confidence in me to be the best MHFAider I can be!”
